Everything on the light opening angle
We have often talked about the color of light and light intensity, but another very an important factor for obtaining correct lighting in a project, whether it is a large public space, or simply the homeroom, is the ' opening angle of the light or opening of the light beam.
For each
lighting product, we will always find the type of light beam or lighting angle indicated
and our choice must be calibrated according to the design needs; this is why it
is essential to know what it is. Let's see it together:
What is the opening of the light beam?
The opening
of the light beam is the luminous angle created by a light source when it
reaches a certain surface, it is expressed in degrees that vary from a minimum
width of 10 ° up to 120 °, depending on the type of lamp.
Naturally
the sharper the emission angle is, the more the light beam will be concentrated
on a precise point and therefore it will be more intense, and compared to
solutions with a wider opening.
Which angle of light opening to choose
The choice
of a lamp is strictly related to the use that will be made of it, it is
therefore essential to take into account two fundamental factors: the distance
from the light source and the area to be illuminated.
The greater
the distance the smaller the opening angle must be since the light intensity
is reduced as you move away from the light source. As anticipated, the size of
the area to be illuminated is decisive.
If we want
to illuminate a small object a smaller angle of opening will be necessary; a closed corner is ideal for focused lighting, for example, to highlight
particularly important decorative elements such as a picture, a piece of
furniture or a point that you want to emphasize. In this case an optimal result
can be obtained with an LED light from 24 to 45 degrees.
If we want
to light up a wider area, like an entire room, it is advisable to choose LED
lamps with a wide opening, therefore greater than 60 °; in this way we will
obtain a diffused and homogeneous light that will not produce shadows.
Examples of use
• 10 ° light
beam: it is the narrowest light beam, generally used for accent lighting for
specific points, works of art and small decorative objects.
• Light beam
between 24 ° and 40 °: it is a medium luminous angle that creates a more
widespread type of lighting. Ideal for public spaces such as shops, restaurants
and in home environments.
• Light beam
over 60 °: A wide light beam, particularly suitable for general lighting in
public buildings and offices.
Small practical example
Let's take a small example to better understand the portion of space lit by a lamp based on
the two variables:
• Degree of
light opening
• Meters of
distance between the source and the object to be lit
A lamp with
an average aperture of 60 ° placed at 3 meters distance, it illuminates a circular surface whose diameter is 3.46 meters, while at the same distance a
light with an opening angle of 15 ° illuminates a surface of about 80
centimeters.
This makes
we fully understand the importance of assessing in advance the effect we want
to achieve and choose the lamp with the right degree of opening of the light
beam.
