The importance of light in a bar or restaurant
We have
often repeated that light affects mood and many other aspects of our lives, but
have you ever stopped to think about how light also affects your business?
The right
light is indeed fundamental in our homes, but it is even more so in public
places such as bars or restaurants.
In
commercial establishments, especially those dealing with catering, lighting is
essential to offer guests a true and enjoyable gastronomic experience. But how
can lightly make a restaurant successful?
The importance of light in an environment
Light and
color are the main elements that build an environment, light is so important in
the life of the human being to influence its mood and the perception of time.
Light can, therefore, be used as an element that enhances certain qualities or
hides the critical aspects of a space, helping to express its personality and
define its character.
In an
interior design project, all the elements are studied and defined from the
beginning, in order to cause feelings and moods and it is precisely in this
that light plays a fundamental role in a restaurant or a bar. Nowadays, even in
catering, the aim is not only to provide service and quality products but to
create unique and unforgettable experiences from entering the restaurant to
leaving it, experiences that are so pleased that we come back and recommend a
place rather than another, based naturally on food but also on other
sensations.
Which type of lighting to choose for your restaurant
The type of
lighting will essentially depend on three factors:
·
Type
of local and clientele: For a bar that serves mainly breakfast, a natural and
diffused light will be preferred, unlike a romantic restaurant for couples, in
which people seek privacy and for which led spotlight that illuminates the
tables they will surely be more suitable to make customers forget that they are
not alone, thus putting them much more at ease.
·
Type
of space: An element to be carefully evaluated is the orientation of the space
and the natural light sources present (windows, skylights). Only by knowing the
natural light sources available to you can you integrate them with artificial
light sources?
·
Lighting
distribution in the different areas of competence: Most restaurants and bars
are structured around a linear distribution scheme for customer areas, i.e. a
reception area, followed by a refreshment area, which can be divided into two
areas, the most familiar and private, and finally a bar area. Of course there
are always also a toilet area, corridors, and a kitchen. It is of fundamental
importance to use artificial light, indirect or punctual, to correctly
differentiate the various areas of the room.
But how?
Let's see it in detail.
How to differentiate the areas of the room with the light
·
Corridors
and circulation areas: These are the areas where more light is needed to guide
customers to their table and give them an overall view of the environment, as
well as promoting safety and avoiding unpleasant accidents.
·
Refreshment
area-tables: For this area, lighting is usually used mainly warm enough to
create an atmosphere, but without exaggeration, because of an excessively hot light
could distort the color of the food.
·
The light must be indirect, so as not to create annoying shadows that could prevent
a simple reading of the menu or disturb the customers. It is possible to use
lamps with diffused light or luminaires with indirect light, directing them on
the walls and creating a softer environment.
·
If
there is a more private area in the restaurant, dedicated to couples or people
seeking greater privacy, this area can be equipped with a suspension amp.
Installed at a distance of 70 cm from the table top. This type of element
contributes to creating a very intimate and comfortable environment.
·
Bar
area: this area has a very important role, it is an attractive center for
customers and also the one where the cash desk is usually located, for this it
needs direct and punctual lighting. Generally, to focus on the bar area,
suspended lamps or backlit panels are used.
With the right attention to the lighting of a room, customers will feel at ease and
will be encouraged to spend more time there and of course, come back.
